Spencerian Workshop: Fully Booked!
Please check back for more workshops in the new year.
In this workshop, we will focus on the script’s basic strokes and letterforms, and study the pen techniques required to produce its’ characteristic shades and hairlines.
“Spencerian writing comes to us with a reputation for beauty, and it certainly is one of the most beautiful styles ever known. But it also has features of speed and ease. The fifty-two degree slant was carefully chosen as that which obtained for writers the greatest speed. And the plan of using only seven basic strokes to form all letters contributes to the ease of this system. Spencer taught that that once such basics are learned writers can be individual in their styles, especially in the flourishes of the capital letters.” – Extract from the Theory of Spencerian Penmanship
About the Instructor
Over a 30 year love affair with calligraphy, Patricia has studied many different lettering styles both with broad edge and pointed pen scripts. In the 1980’s Patricia worked as a self-taught calligrapher doing graduation certificates and private commissions. She renewed her love for calligraphy in 2018 when she discovered pointed pen scripts and attended Iampeth and the International Calligraphy conference. In 2019, she joined the Manitoba Calligrapher’s Association and has grown consistently since then both through this organization and her independent studies. Patricia has studied Spencerian with Harvest Crittenden, Michael Sull, and Pat Blair.

Supply List for Spencerian Workshop
October 26, 2024
Participants are asked to bring the following supplies to class with them on October 26th. Should you need assistance locating any of the required items, please check our Resources page or contact us.
- Pen Holder – for Right-Handed writers: an oblique pen holder is preferable. A straight holder will work but it may prove difficult to maintain the correct slant when writing. For Left-Handed writers: either a left handed oblique or a straight pen holder, depending on your preference.
- Pen Nibs – for beginners: Medium Flex Pointed Nib such as Nikko G or Zebra G. For experienced Pointed Pen writers: Gillott 303, Hunt 101, Leonardt Principal EF or a nib of your choice.
- Any of the following papers: Canson Marker Layout, Borden & Riley Marker Layout, Claire Fontaine Triomphe, Rhodia (blank – unlined), Canson XL Marker paper.
- Calligraphy Ink that is not Acrylic such as Sumi Moon Palace, Walnut, Pelikan 4001, or Higgins Eternal. Iron Gall Inks: McCaffery’s (non-gloss), Fox and Quills.
- Mechanical pencil, eraser, ruler.
- A container for water to rinse nibs. A second container for clean water to dilute your ink.
- A few paper towels to wipe nibs and possible spills.
- Please remember to bring a lunch!
Note: If your nib is brand new, it will need to be prepared for use before the class. You can wipe it with isopropyl/rubbing alcohol, wash it with toothpaste or stick it into a potato for a few minutes to remove the manufacturer’s protective oil coating. Test if it is ready for use by dipping it in ink. If the ink completely coats the nib and adheres to it, it is ready.
