Workshop Information



The Calligraphers’ Guild of Manitoba is pleased to host an afternoon of Watercolour Painting with Sylvia Russell.

This class is suitable for Experienced beginner to Intermediate levels. No drawing will be required as the image is provided.

Enjoy an afternoon of step by step instruction on how to paint roses in watercolour. At the end of the class, you will be able to carry your “roses” home on a 9×11″ finished piece.

Painting Techniques learned:
 
How to contour your brushstrokes
Create textured abstract backgrounds
Glaze paint to create 3D effects
Soft edging
Color mixing for warms, cools and “darks”



Participants are asked to bring the following supplies with them to class on November 15th, 2025.

  • Watercolour Brushes: (Grumbacher, Simmons, Princeton)
  • 1” flat brush
  • #2 script liner—at least 1” long
  • #5 round brush
  • #10 round brush
  • Paints: (Daniel Smith, Winsor Newton)
  • Cadmium yellow light, Cadmium orange, Cadmium red, Alizarin Crimson Red, Violet, Pthalo Blue, Burnt Sienna, Payne’s Gray, Hooker’s Green
  • Paper:
  • Cold or hot press Arches 6×8”(2 pieces) 9×11” (1 piece)
  • Miscellaneous:
  • Synthetic Sponge (to wipe brush on) or paper towels
  • Water containers: large mouth container or plastic snack container with 4 different compartments (keeps cleaner water available)
  • HB pencil, white vinyl eraser, ruler
  • Small water spray bottle
  • Plastic painting surface (coroplast) or any plastic flat surface, plexiglass etc. 16×20 to tape paper onto
  • ½” or 1” Masking tape (vanilla color)

For an optional $15.00 fee, the instructor will provide the following supplies:

  • Brushes
  • Paints
  • Miscellaneous items to try out (students will still need to bring their own watercolour paper)

Sylvia Russell, B.A., is a visual artist and teacher creating in a variety of painting mediums and fibre textures. Her fine art studies have included courses from the School of Fine Art at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Mennonite Heritage Art Gallery, St. James Art Club as well as attending workshops taught by Kelowna, Lethbridge, Calgary and Ontario artists. Sylvia enjoys sharing her skills of drawing, watercolour and mixed media with students. She has taught through St. James-Assiniboia Continuing Education, public schools, Providence College, Community School of Music and the Arts and at Canadian Mennonite University where she had the privilege of being the Artist in Residence 2003-2004. Sylvia’s exhibits include Mennonite Heritage Art Gallery (2007), solo exhibit at Westwood Library (2006), Canadian Mennonite University (2005), University of Manitoba Fine Art Open House (2003). She has also shown her work in galleries located in Canmore,AB, Saskatoon, SK and Morden, Mb. She has patrons in the United States, England, Israel, Egypt and Switzerland.

 Nurtured by her relationships with family, friends and God, Sylvia continues to enjoy sharing beauty with others through her artistic creations.
