Instructor biographies

Kathie McIlvride

Kathie has been a calligrapher and lettering artist for over 30 years. Her love of colour and her playfulness is infused into her work.

She provides artwork and lettering to card companies across North America. Her work can also be seen locally in logos and designs.

Kathie delights in creating and teaching workshops through which she shares her love of lettering, colour and exploration. She has taught to a variety of groups and calligraphy guilds across Canada.

Lorraine Douglas

Lorraine is a long time member of the CGM now living on Vancouver Island.

She graduated from the Universities of Manitoba and Alberta and has a Certificate in Fine Art from the Vancouver Island School of Art.

Lorraine has studied calligraphy and book arts with many great teachers. She is most interested in experimenting with tools and techniques. She loves having fun with letters and books, as well as making prints at Cecelia Press Studio in Victoria.

Lorraine looks forward to her returns to Manitoba, and seeing old friends and making new calligraphic friends.

Connie Furgason

Connie’s love for lettering goes back to grade 5 when she won the Silver Spoon Award for Penmanship. In university her studies in Art and English led to a career as a lettering artist, and since 1981 she has been teaching classes and workshops across Canada and the U.S. Her work has been published in ABC Canada, The Spirit of Calligraphy, Speedball Handbook 23rd Edition, The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering and most recently, Fine Renditions. Ongoing work includes lettering and illustration for the commercial card and print industry as well as private commissions.

Connie was the director of “Pen-Ultima ’99,” the 19th International Calligraphy Conference in Lethbridge, Alberta and two regional conferences. She has also been on faculty at several international conferences.

Connie currently lives on beautiful Vancouver Island.

Calligraphy and Other Artful Things

Laura Eriksson

Laura was a well loved and active member and teacher of the CGM from 2003 to 2008. She is a long time calligrapher and has studied under Sheila Waters, Martin Jackson, Peter Thornton, Laurie Doctor and Kathie McIlvride. Laura taught elementary school for 15 years. Currently she teaches calligraphy to junior high school students, seniors, and members of the Vancouver Calligraphy Guild.

Laura currently lives in Vancouver with her husband, Sven, and is a busy grandmother and an exquisite tea party hostess.
